To spend some quality time together, Liz booked a two night overnight stay tour during the winter school holidays with Honeysuckles Astronomy Tours, by the sea. All members of the family were relatively new to stargazing through a telescope and the experience was fabulous for them. The two children aged 6 and 8 were thrilled with what they saw. This age group for children is at the minimum end for observing at this this level given the need to understand independent focusing of the telescope and looking through the elevated eyepiece. But it worked out a treat.

From the first star observed and described, the group became enthralled with the different types of objects that were to unfold before them during the evening. An evening which was ideal for observing. Galaxies, open star clusters, globular clusters, star forming nebulae were all revealed in spectacular detail. For a family getaway with a difference away from “mobile phones and social media”, this is as good as it gets. And to top it all off, the ocean beach is a 30 second walk away.
